Wow, what a year it’s been, right? Despite so many events and places being shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has not impacted the amount of news this year. We lost many great heroes such as Kobe Bryant and Chadwick Boseman, both of whom are two of the most mentioned celebrities on social media this year. We also had our fair share of laughs with Tiger King conspiracies and following the contestants on Love Is Blind (yes, that happened just a few months ago…feels like it’s been years). This year has brought us a lot of highs and lows. It was a year of politics, of appreciation, and a year that really made us rethink how much we might love being at work. While many of us were stuck or rather safe at home, we truly were coming up with some of the weirdest memes and hashtags to date.
These are a few we think should receive honorable mentions.
#toiletpapergate
Yes, what a whirlwind this was back at the beginning of shutdown. This is something we can all laugh about now, but at the time people were hoarding toilet paper – of all things to hoard during a pandemic. Luckily, those days of initial panic are behind us and we’ve all learned to share. And, to keep a few extra rolls on hand without obsessing over our collections. TP doesn’t hold a candle to our shoe collections, we checked!
Baby Yoda
One of the unfortunate downsides to 2020 was there wasn’t a lot of new releases for movies or TV shows, but we did get lucky with the return of the universe’s cutest fictional character – Baby Yoda. When Disney’s The Mandalorian returned in October this year, so did the rush of hilarious Baby Yoda memes. In fact, the Child even led way to some pretty funny marketing opportunities such as Planter’s Peanuts introducing ‘Baby Nut’ at this year’s Superbowl. Amazing how advertising teams always find a way to add a little more wow factor to the commercials played throughout this event’s broadcast year after year.
#QuarantineandChill
This fun hashtag started at the beginning of quarantine when people were initially feeling stuck at home and desperately trying to find something to do to entertain themselves and their families. This led to some pretty creative and fun ideas from a lot of parents trying to find ways to keep their kids busy at home.
#Covidiots
We hope none of you were the victim of this hashtag because people who were shared in these viral posts were those who weren’t following safety guidelines for COVID-19. It became a humorous way to call out those who were improperly following protocols such as gathering in large groups or people not wearing their masks properly (or at all). Please note, we are not condoning online bullying by mentioning this we’re simply highlighting what happened and we do encourage people to wear a proper face covering over BOTH the mouth and nose AT THE SAME TIME please, and to keep 6 feet apart as well. If anything good comes of this pandemic it might just be that people start to understand and maintain their bubble of distance. No one likes a charlie close talker after all.
The year 2020 was a whirlwind. There’s a lot that’s happened but fortunately, we were all able to stay together by staying apart and finding ways to make the world laugh, one funny internet trend at a time. 2021 is a new year, so let’s try our best to end this pandemic together by following protocols and staying safe. Continue to be kind and look for positivity wherever you can. If you’ve got any fun hashtags or trends you think should be added to this blog post to commemorate them, feel free to send us an email at info@3sixtymarketingsolutions.com – though please do keep it light, positive, friendly and PG13.
